Under a Fig tree.. Blogged Bible Study

Today is day one of the blogged bible study.  We will be starting with The Gospel of John chapter 1.

_________

Yesterday in leadership training at church, I made the comment…”Two years ago I had some preconceived notions of what I would be doing after Discipleship glass. Sitting here today I never thought that Christ would be using me in so many different and unexpected ways.”

As I started reading John chapter one it struck me that I can not have preconceived notions of how God will use me.   He has seen how he will use me from the beginning.

John1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

The Gospel of John is mainly know for proving the divinity of Christ as God.

Christ was with God, Christ is God. Christ was there when man was made in their image.

Gen 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth,  and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

John 1:10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.

After reading these 2 verses and realizing that God intended us to discover him, I think of all the times I have seen God’s creation and just passed it by and not taken in his glory.   The times I have not recognized Christ working in my life to bend me to his Fathers will.  When if I am made in their image, whole body, heart and mind, I should recognize and see it as they do.

John 1: 43 -50 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, “Follow me.” 44Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.   “Come and see,” said Philip.   47When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, “Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false.” 48“How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.    Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.”   49Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”   50Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that.” 51He then added, “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

It is clear that from the beginning Christ has seen how he will use me, and will show me greater things than I imagined.  He will mold me again into the image of Them who created me.

I never would have thought two years ago I would be working on a book, getting ready to lead a Discipleship Class, and working out new and different ways to spread His word.  I am excited that Jesus spotted me under my fig tree.

  1. “God intended us to discover him, I think of all the times I have seen God’ creation and just past it by and no taken in his glory.”

Right on…I agree. Reminds me of Romans 1:19-20. God may feel far off at times but he is everywhere (I don’t mean in any pantheistic/panentheistic sense) through (not in) nature–his creation.

    Great thoughts friend!

  2. I love the “US” in created in “THIER” image..reminds of the tower of Babel..when they said “let us work together and make a name for our selves” after GOd had said to seperate and fill the land…God said “let US go down and seperate” hahaha I love that play on the word US.

Good thoughts..and I am looking forward to what everyone else will see in this too.

  3. I’m with you, excited He spotted me “under the fig tree” and called me to Him. He knew us before the foundation of the world! Blows me away when I try to wrap my puny little brain around that thought.

    His creation…rapturous!

  4. Nate..I got ya. It is kind of like trying how God sees time. Almost imposible.

Darla…Remeber God’s breath was upon the waters also. So we have the Spirit as part of our identity.

Michele…I should have said “He saw me sitting in my recliner”..That is where I posted from…. ;)

  5. I have faced some difficult challenges in the last two years, illness and facing some health issues was the big one. But through it, I have looked upon creation in such a different light. I have noticed the birds, the trees, the animals, the people, etc. I have even notice beyond the spiritual realm. I love the verses that Jesus tells nathanael, “And he saith unto him, verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” John 1:51. Can you imagine the realm of angels upon our Lord!! I have seen in him intimacy that He has wanted from me, I am also glad He found me under the fig tree. What an awesome post. I can not wait till tomorrows post.

  6. Tanya…Thanks for stopping by.

It is true that once you realize how intimate God is with us, you see everything throug that intamacy. Everything becomes about Him.

  7. “It is clear that from the beginning Christ has seen how he will use me, and will show me greater things than I imagined. He will mold me again into the image of Them who created me.” This is excellent Carl.

Too often we tend to forget one of the Trinity in our walk, and in turn it lessens our effectiveness for the Kingdom.

“He then added, “I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.””

I wonder if people really believed this…I also wonder if they understand that Heaven is still open today, and how very real the spiritual realm is. Thank you for this!! :)

  8. Deborah… Their are many Followers of Christ that have lost the Hope of Heaven. They do not see the little day to day Joy in this life that points them to Heaven.

  9. Holy Spirit? I could not ever forget HIM…my counselor…my teacher…the one who prays on my behalf when I don’t know how to pray..the one who empowers me…

AMen to all you wrote..all three present in the beginning..all three seperate yet all together..

  10. Amen brother! Great post.
